Racing pianos on public roads is not free of risk [!], and the organisers of The Grand Race take the safety of all participants, observers and the general public very seriously. Every effort is being made to anticipate and minimise the risk of harm to persons or property.
The race route is a minor metalled road servicing the car park and tourist facilities at the Cairngorm ski area. The lower part of the proposed route will be closed to traffic for the duration of the event, and the upper part carries light two-way vehicle traffic only. A uniformed policeman will be present to advise and aid the marshals. In accordance with police advice, volunteer race marshals equipped with high visibility clothing and two-way radio communications will accompany all race teams. A radio communication net will enable coordination between principal race staff, the start and finish areas, and race HQ.
The piano will be securely restrained at all times to prevent it and the trolley running out of control on the mountain road. Each trolley will be based on a lightweight commercial roadworthy trailer, and will include hands-off braking and emergency runaway braking. The piano will rest on a purpose built cradle built on to the trailer, and will be secured to the trailer in accordance with road safety regulations. Finally, the piano/trailer combination will be secured at all times to a back-up belay on the accompanying race committee vehicle. This last measure is a ‘long stop’ safety precaution only; at no time will the vehicle tow or support the piano/trolley except in the event of an emergency.
First aid cover will be provided for the event.
Your contribution to safety
The Grand Race is about having a great day out doing something different in fine surroundings. At the end of the day, a lot of people stand to benefit from the funds that will be raised. Unfortunately, all the precautions in the world cannot completely eliminate risk of injury or mishap, and all individuals wishing to take part in the event must understand that they do so entirely at their own risk. The organisers can accept no responsibility for loss or injury sustained as a result of participation in this event.
On a more positive note, there is much that you can do to prevent mishaps on the day:
Please ensure that you are adequately fit and well prepared. A good level of general fitness is essential, and you must satisfy yourself that you have sufficient athletic fitness for the demands of the race. You must also ensure that you have no medical condition or infirmity which may increase your risk of injury or harm; the responsibility for this lies with you.
Dress appropriately. The weather in the Cairngorms can be severe at any time of the year – it may also be hot and dry – so come prepared for all mountain conditions. Even if conditions are fair at the start, they may not be higher up on the course; the race finishes at 630m above sea level.
Wear suitable footwear. A pair of boots, with adequate ankle support, good quality soles (grip), and toe protection are recommended.
Warm up well. Laying into a grand piano straight from the car is……not advisable!
Drink adequate water.
Act responsibly, follow the race plan, and avoid alcohol or sedative medication prior to the event.
This advice is for guidance only and is not meant to be exhaustive. If you are concerned about your ability to take part, please seek appropriate professional advice before applying.
